How to create an alpine hill

We use the word “create” because it is a creative process and there are many options for how your future masterpiece will look. Perhaps this is the beauty of the Alpine hills, that there is not a single alpine slide like that, and this is the beauty of its creation. You can fantasize, use a variety of materials and plants that you love. The climate of Safed allows you to create a beautiful alpine hill, the plants that you need for it take root very well, yet Safed is located on the mountain. And besides this, there are a lot of necessary materials around, namely stones, some of which are very textured. We will tell you only the basic principles of its creation, and then you will create it yourself.

So, the Alpine slide is a section of the garden with an artificial structure made of stones and plants that grow in crevices of stones. They are simple and beautiful at the same time. You need to remember that the main forming link in such a composition is stone, and plants only complement it. But an alpine hill is not just a pile of stones. First of all, you need to lay the stones so that there are several sides of the view, in other words, so that the slide looks beautiful if it is viewed from different sides. At the very beginning of your work, you need to determine the size of your future masterpiece, if your garden is small, then you should not make the alpine hill too huge. An alpine hill should fit well into the overall composition of your garden and smoothly transition, for example, into a flower garden, lawn or artificial pond. Usually a lawn is a good background for an alpine hill, it resembles alpine meadows and links the composition into a single whole.

Since there are small gardens in Israel, we will consider the construction of a small alpine hill. So, everything is ready and we will begin the construction of the rock garden, which begins with the layout of the used area. At the proposed site, dig a hole, the depth of which should be from 20 to 40 centimeters. Next, determine the contours of your alpine hill, the contours should be natural. At the bottom of the dug hole, pour a layer of rubble or any other drainage. Then clay, loam (we have already talked about soils earlier), hamra are poured, and everything is compacted in layers. In this case, you form the slopes of the future slide. Next, pour a fertile layer of earth 20-30 centimeters. Now it remains to install stones on top, at the foot of the hill, lay larger specimens, then the stones should be proportionally reduced at the top. Thus, you will achieve maximum naturalness and stability. In the process, fantasize, imagine what plants can look beautiful in one place or another. When laying stones, leave earthen pockets, then fill them with earth and plant plants there. You can use a variety of plants, even corms, such as daffodils, irises, tulips, poppies. You also need to think about when you will choose plants, so that the hill will please you all year round, so you need to choose plants that bloom at different times of the year or remain green and look interesting at any time of the year, and are unpretentious at the same time. Use ground cover plants such as Australian violet, ampoule bacopa (or suter), dichondra, turinia, stone rose (it is also young or echeveria), alternating them with meadow plants such as lavender and sage that take root well in Safed.
